My solo adventure this weekend was cut short by the growing fire in nearby Sierra National Forest. I had several days of beautiful skies, spectacular granite cliffs, and serene alpine lakes. On Saturday a grey, sickly haze rolled in while soot and ash began to drift from the sky. When I woke up my tent was blanketed in a thin grey layer of grit. The sun was dark red and cast a yellow light, transforming the High Sierras into an alien landscape. I came home one day early and saw the news that the southern fires had consumed nearly 100,000 acres.
