I saw these magnificent beasts strutting their stuff on the way to my hike this morning. This species of Wild Turkey is found all across North America. These particular birds are Meleagris Gallopavo Intermedia, known as the Rio Grande subspecies. Gorgeous and bizarre.
Turkey Anatomy Trivia:
Snood: the weird flap of skin which dangles over the turkey’s beak
Major Caruncles: The fleshy balls dangle halfway down the turkey’s neck and turn bright red to attract mates
Beard: The long, wiry hairs at the base of the turkey’s neck — the length denotes the bird’s age
Rectrices: Visually striking, long tail feathers, tipped in tan and brown
