Sable Falls

Just a few minutes drive from our bed and breakfast in Grand Marais within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore lies this beautiful waterfall which cascades down the spring-fed Sable Creek to the rocky shores of Lake Superior.

We spent the afternoon at the lakeshore among the rocks, searching for the elusive pieces of agate which are scattered amongst the stones and boulders along this part of the lakeshore. Mineral lovers drive for miles to search the beaches for these natural gemstones which hold stunning swirled patterns of metamorphic rock and oxidized iron.

We kicked around these beaches for hours, within earshot of Sable Falls. Sable creek was much warmer than Lake Superior, and we enjoyed sitting lazily in its swift water, watching the ripples fade into the Great Lake.
